Australians evacuate as rain and floods hit Victoria

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/09/06/australia.flooding/index.html?hpt=T2#fbid=pRu9S5QleJQ&wom=false

These days, the Oceania has suffered one after another. At first it was a devastating earthquake which shocked New Zealand, and now the Victoria state of Australia is under water.

Today we will focus on a news from CNN which covered an emergency occurrence just happened in Australia yesterday. It reported a heavy rain and flooding, and a mass evacuation which had already began since it happened, and was still proceeding during the disaster.

The reporter used the governmental spokeswoman as the main resource, this spokeswoman spoke on behalf of State Emergency Service. So this resource could be considered reliable. Especially when it was involved in major damage, official statistics would always be a good choice to depend on.

After introduced the flooding situation briefly, the reporter represented the condition of casualties immediately. Generally, death toll and casualties could always be the most attractive factor of a disaster report, people cared about these issues. So indicating relevant conditions of casualties quickly and precisely is very important to a disaster report. And the author of this story performed well here. It was luckily that no deaths were declared, even significant injuries were seldom reported. But to be objective, it also revealed a serious loss on physical treasures.

The article examined the whole situation the local government had found and the measurements they had done throughout the unexpected disaster. It also provided a list of regions which were affected, this was like an announcement to show the specific damage situation, could give people more understanding about this disaster. In the end of the article, the author didn’t forget to write down the forecast of weather from the Australian government’s Bureau of Meteorology.

But the story still has some setbacks, like no particular background introduction, no specific information and lack of prospect. Maybe it was because this story was only a temporary brief, more detailed information would come soon, I think.

Discontent fuels Mongolia's far-right groups

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-11141472

Today we are talking about an interesting issue which may be far away from people’s daily attention focus. This was aroused from a BBC news, but compared with other news, this is more like a short feature writing. It is about a phenomenon which they called nationalism, but I consider that new Nazism.

The news’ name is “Discontent fuels Mongolia’s far-right groups”. The first part of this writing showed the background, told us where the discontent came from. The reason pointed to this country’s big neighbor China. After decades of years of influence made by former Soviets, Mongolia had searched for new support both from military and politics. Then China was coming to fulfill the gap. It provided assistance to Mongolian military and investment to the country’s economic. But now more and more Mongolians began to express their discontent against the relation between Chinese government and their own administration. The reporter indicated the people’s worries, they suspected China would undermine their own way of development.

The main part of the writing used “nationalism” to be its title, this was also quoted from a member of far-right group called Dayar Mongol. Dayar Mongol was the protagonist of our story. I couldn’t decide what on earth this organization was but from personal view, I don’t think it is an organization with good manners and nice motivation. The news said, “Swastikas and slogans are daubed on walls across the city”. And Swastika is the symbol of Nazism.

The behaviors of them also illustrated their fierce reactions. The example the news represented firstly was a prominent video which showed a man shaving the head of a Mongolian woman. They blamed her on sleeping with Chinese. I think this was a smart measure to tell audiences what attitude towards the organization but at the same time, stayed objectively.

The writer also contacted some of the group’s members, one of them was the leader, named Erdenebileg Zenemyadar. He dressed traditionally when being interviewed. Although many Swastikas were appeared around his organization, he insisted on their justice. He realized some of their behaviors “is wrong but it’s happening a lot”. Another interviewee was a young member who was also more radical. He dressed combat pants, with swastika necklace around his neck., he said Nazis’ nationalism stood for keeping own nation’s pure to themselves.

The reporter also interviewed representatives of social minority, gay activists and victims of the violence. They were sympathetic to the concerns and discontents, anxious were transmitted at the meantime.

Among the whole news, the reporter showed his professional skills of journalism, kept peaceful wording and stuck to objective perspectives.

Stupid governance

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2010-08/21/content_11184303.htm

People live in Guangzhou, the capital city of South China’s Guangdong province will suffer a crackdown of cutting tools for two months.

This news was reported by China Daily on last Saturday. There will be a big sports meeting, the Asian Games in Guangzhou which is scheduled to start on Nov 12. It was said in consideration of security control, the government decided to clamp the sales of knives down during the whole process of the sports meeting. According to the administration’s notice, only kitchen knives and large-sized cutting tools can be available for people, furthermore, they have to buy them in designated shops, under surveillance of cameras and infrared security systems. All of the buyers who want to buy knives should first have authorized proofs, and then they will be registered in police records.

The report finally said residents expressed their understood about this policy, they agreed with the new policy. “The clampdown on sharp tools will not affect their daily life”, the report said. And they quoted from an ordinary civilian

Do you find this policy is stupid and full of flaws? This is another stupid policy of China government again besides dozens of governance lack of wisdom. If a clampdown of knives can prevent criminals and violence effectively? This solution is so insane that it make me laugh. Weapons can be formed from any kind of things as long as there is a need. They should abandon every hard thing and even should make stone, water, wall, vehicles, anything far away from human beings, then the people will be “safe”. For years, the China’s government is losing its mind, more and more crazy, insane and stupid measures are being done by them. The only thing they know is forbidden everything.

Only a fool would believe this policy would make people safer.

Mourning day of China again

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-10975066

Besides the emergency event happened on the Yellow Sea that the US and South Korea held series of joint military drills, there was another severe accident actually drawn many Chinese’s hearts. That was the devastating landslide happened in Zhouqu county, Gansu province in NW China last week.

Now, after more than a week’s relief effort and statistics, the death toll has finally rose to 1239 people, still 505 are listed as missing. This serious disaster has brought much pain to the country. Since the situation is alleviating, in order to express the respect and sorrow about those lives who have lost, the government decided to hold one day as a national mourning day. And many media have reported this mourning day.

BBC news take “China holds day of mourning for Gansu landslide victims” as title, wrote a report about it. The report conveys the basic information about the condition China has suffered in this tragedy. It told us China closed all of its public entertainment and half-mast flags were performing by government offices and agencies. The left part of the media news was still about the relief effort itself. It quotes the official announcement to convince the hygiene and safety became the prior affair. It also reviews the history of this kind of mourning days in China. Three mourning days are involved. They are Zhouqu, Yushu, Wenchuan respectively. Along with the news, there is a picture showing the residents and rescue workers stopped moving, kept silent, were attending the memorial ceremony.

I thought there would be some special stories or different angles presented by BBC about this event. But I only saw BBC disappointed me by almost using all of the information directly came from Xinhua which is the state-run news agency of this sole biggest communists country of all the world.

If US aircraft carrier carrries into WAR?

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/world/2010-08/07/content_11114261.htm

Recent days, the international attention over the global security has been drawn by a severe and perilous attempting gesture made by the United States and its allies. Over moths, the US grouped its military power of West-Pacific, held a joint military drill with South Korea on the sea near China. The drill was presumed to intimidate China and its military forces by exoteric and public press. And now, the tension is becoming even more unstable while most of us thought the situation would alleviate. After the first stage of a scheduled joint exercise held between the United States and Republic of Korea (ROK), Seoul and Washington claimed a further step of these series of drills which is extremely prominent because this time the US may push too much beyond the edge of Beijing's endurance.

"US aircraft carrier heads for Yellow Sea", the title of the news written by China Daily is very sharp, not only fulfill the basic needs of news writing but also reveal the serious value of the news itself. The US military is heading for our border, China's border. This is the information the news aim to transmit to both Chinese and foreigners. As all we know, "US aircraft carrier" and "Yellow Sea", both of these are two crucial nouns. They are so glaring because these two words illustrate imminent danger of conflict action or even war between countries, PROC and US, the two most powerful forces over the world. The writing then quotes the spokesman from both sides to show their reaction and opinion over this international issue. Researchers and experts were also quoted to expand the realizations and scopes.
